By Cynthia Ann Parker
I was born in Illinois in 1824. My family moved to Texas when I was a young girl. In 1836, my family was living at Parker Fort when it was attacked by a band of Comanche Indians. My parents and my siblings were all killed in the attack, and I was taken captive.
I was raised by the Comanches for the next 24 years. I learned their language and customs, and I came to think of myself as one of them. I married a Comanche man named Peta Nocona, and we had three children together. We lived a happy and fulfilling life on the Comanche reservation.
In 1860, the United States Army attacked the Comanche reservation. My husband and our children were killed in the attack, and I was recaptured by the Army. I was taken to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where I was held for several years.
In 1864, I was released from Fort Sill and returned to my family in Texas. I was reunited with my brother, who had survived the attack on Parker Fort. I lived with my brother and his family for the rest of my life. I died in 1871 at the age of 47.
My story is a tragic one, but it is also a story of hope and resilience. I survived the massacre of my family, and I raised a family of my own. I came to love the Comanche people, and I learned to appreciate their way of life. I am proud of the woman I became, and I am grateful for the life I lived.
