Born in Catalonia, Spain, in 1580, Peter Claver was drawn to a life of religious service from a young age. In 1602, he entered the Jesuit Free Download, where he excelled in his studies and demonstrated a deep devotion to Christ and his teachings.

In 1610, Claver heard about the plight of enslaved Africans in the New World. His heart was stirred by their suffering, and he resolved to dedicate his life to serving them.

Mission to Cartagena

In 1616, Claver arrived in Cartagena, Colombia, a major slave port. The city was a hub of the transatlantic slave trade, and thousands of Africans were brought there in horrific conditions.

Claver was deeply moved by the suffering he witnessed. He spent countless hours visiting the slaves in their crowded and unsanitary quarters, offering them physical and spiritual comfort.

Apostle of the Blacks

Claver's tireless ministry earned him the title "Apostle of the Blacks." He baptized thousands of slaves, taught them the Christian faith, and provided them with food, clothing, and medical care.

But Claver's work went beyond mere charity. He also denounced the evils of slavery and advocated for the abolition of the slave trade. He preached against the injustices that were being committed against the African population, and he called upon the Spanish authorities to treat the slaves with dignity and respect.

Challenges and Persecution

Claver's courageous stance against slavery drew the ire of slave owners and colonial officials. He was threatened, harassed, and even imprisoned for his outspokenness.

Undeterred, Claver continued his mission, driven by his unwavering faith and love for the suffering. He became a symbol of hope and resistance for the enslaved Africans, and his presence in Cartagena was a constant reminder of the injustice of slavery.

Legacy of Compassion

Saint Peter Claver died in Cartagena in 1654, at the age of 74. He had spent over 40 years of his life serving the enslaved Africans, and his impact on their lives was immeasurable.

After his death, Claver's legacy continued to inspire generations of people. He was canonized a saint by Pope Leo XIII in 1888, and his feast day is celebrated on September 9th.
