In the annals of North American exploration, few names shine brighter than that of David Thompson. A skilled surveyor, cartographer, and fur trader, Thompson spent decades traversing the vast and uncharted wilderness of the continent, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of maps and journals that chronicled his adventures.

In his new book, Tracking David Thompson Across North America, author and historian Jeremy Mouat retraces Thompson's remarkable journey, from his humble beginnings as a fur trader in the Canadian Northwest to his epic expeditions across the continent. With painstaking research and vivid prose, Mouat brings Thompson's story to life, capturing the challenges, triumphs, and hardships he faced along the way.

Thompson's journey began in 1784, when he was just 14 years old. He joined the North West Company as an apprentice fur trader and spent the next several years traveling and trading in the wilderness of what is now western Canada. In 1792, Thompson embarked on his first major expedition, a two-year journey to explore the Columbia River. He was the first European to map the entire course of the river, from its headwaters in the Rocky Mountains to its mouth on the Pacific Ocean.

Over the next two decades, Thompson continued to explore the North American West. He mapped the Missouri River, the Saskatchewan River, and the Athabasca River. He crossed the Rocky Mountains multiple times and explored the vast interior of what is now British Columbia. Thompson's maps and journals were invaluable to other explorers, fur traders, and settlers, and they helped to shape our understanding of the North American continent.

In addition to his contributions to geography, Thompson was also a keen observer of the natural world. He recorded detailed descriptions of the plants, animals, and landscapes he encountered. His writings provide a valuable glimpse into the ecology of North America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Tracking David Thompson Across North America is a gripping and informative account of one of the most important explorers in North American history. Mouat's meticulous research and engaging writing style bring Thompson's story to life, and his book is a must-read for anyone interested in exploration, history, or the natural world.
