On February 28, 1942, the USS Houston was sunk by Japanese forces in the Sunda Strait during the Battle of the Java Sea. Of the 1,061 men on board, only 368 survived.
One of those survivors was Marcus Apothecar, a young radio operator from New York City. Apothecar was trapped in the ship's wreckage for three days before being rescued. He then spent the next three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Japanese POW camps, including the infamous Death Railway.
Apothecar's story is one of incredible survival and resilience. He endured unimaginable hardships, including starvation, disease, and torture. But through it all, he never gave up hope.
In 1945, Apothecar was finally liberated from the POW camps. He returned to the United States a changed man. He was haunted by the memories of his experiences, but he was also determined to make a difference in the world.
Apothecar spent the rest of his life sharing his story with others. He spoke to schools, churches, and community groups. He wrote a book about his experiences, entitled Surviving the Sinking of the USS Houston and the Death Railway.
Apothecar's story is an inspiration to us all. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.
Marcus Apothecar passed away in 2004 at the age of 84. But his story continues to inspire others. His book, Surviving the Sinking of the USS Houston and the Death Railway, is still in print today. It is a powerful reminder of the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity.
