The story of the Baker Bandits begins in the early days of the Korean War. In October 1950, the United States Army was reeling from a series of defeats at the hands of the North Korean People's Army. In a desperate attempt to turn the tide of the war, the US Army launched a massive counteroffensive, codenamed Operation Thunderbolt.
One of the units involved in Operation Thunderbolt was the 1st Battalion, 70th Tank Battalion. On October 20, 1950, the battalion was Free Downloaded to advance into North Korea and seize the town of Unsan. The battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel John H. Chiles, assigned a platoon of five tanks to lead the attack.
The platoon was led by Sergeant First Class Ernest Baker. Baker was a veteran of World War II and a highly decorated soldier. He was also a bit of a rebel, and he had a reputation for being fearless and reckless.
As the platoon advanced into North Korea, they encountered heavy resistance from the North Korean army. The tanks were hit by artillery fire and anti-tank weapons, and several of the crewmen were killed or wounded. Baker's tank was one of the few that survived the initial attack.
With his tank damaged and his crew wounded, Baker was Free Downloaded to withdraw. But Baker refused. He decided to stay behind and fight. He Free Downloaded his crew to abandon the tank and he took control of the machine gun.
For the next several hours, Baker fought off wave after wave of North Korean soldiers. He killed dozens of enemy soldiers and destroyed several enemy tanks. His actions inspired his fellow soldiers, and they rallied around him.
As the battle raged, Baker's tank was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. The blast knocked Baker unconscious and destroyed the tank. Baker was presumed dead, but he had actually survived the blast. He was captured by the North Koreans and taken prisoner.
Baker spent the next three years as a prisoner of war. He was tortured and interrogated by his captors, but he never gave up hope. He escaped from prison several times, but he was always recaptured. Finally, in 1953, Baker was released as part of a prisoner exchange.
After the war, Baker returned to the United States a hero. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Korea. He went on to have a successful career in the Army and retired as a colonel.
The story of the Baker Bandits is a testament to the courage and determination of the American soldier. It is a story of heroism and sacrifice, and it is a story that should never be forgotten.
