Born into poverty in 1942, Carr began singing in church at a young age. His powerful voice and soulful delivery quickly caught the attention of record labels, and in 1961, he signed with Goldwax Records. Carr's debut single, "You've Got My Mind Messed Up," was an instant hit, and he soon became one of the most popular soul singers in the country.
Carr's success was short-lived, however. In 1966, he was arrested for drug possession and sentenced to two years in prison. After his release from prison, Carr struggled to regain his former success. He continued to record and perform, but his career never reached the same heights it had before his arrest.
In 'Bad,' Carr opens up about his struggles with addiction, poverty, and racism. He also shares his thoughts on music, love, and life. The book is a powerful and moving account of one of the most talented and troubled singers of all time.
'Bad' is a must-read for fans of James Carr and soul music. It is a raw and honest account of a life that was both tragic and triumphant.
