Payne Stewart was one of the most popular and successful golfers of his generation. He won 11 PGA Tour events, including the 1991 U.S. Open and the 1999 U.S. Open. He was also a member of the Ryder Cup team four times.

On October 25, 1999, Stewart was tragically killed in a plane crash. He was 42 years old.

The Last Stand of Payne Stewart tells the incredible story of Stewart's life and his final moments. It is a story of tragedy and triumph, of a man who lived life to the fullest and left an inspiring legacy.

Payne Stewart's Early Life

Payne Stewart was born on January 30, 1957, in Springfield, Missouri. He began playing golf at the age of 10, and by the time he was 16, he was one of the top junior golfers in the country.

Stewart attended Southern Methodist University, where he was a three-time All-American. He turned professional in 1979 and quickly established himself as one of the best young players on the PGA Tour.

Stewart's PGA Tour Career

Stewart won his first PGA Tour event, the Byron Nelson Classic, in 1982. He went on to win 10 more PGA Tour events, including two major championships.

Stewart's first major championship victory came at the 1991 U.S. Open. He won the tournament by one stroke over Scott Simpson.

Stewart's second major championship victory came at the 1999 U.S. Open. He won the tournament by one stroke over Phil Mickelson.

Stewart was also a member of the Ryder Cup team four times. He helped the United States team to victory in 1991, 1993, and 1999.

The Plane Crash

On October 25, 1999, Stewart was piloting a Learjet 35 from Orlando, Florida, to Dallas, Texas. The plane crashed in a field in South Dakota, killing Stewart and all five other people on board.

The cause of the crash was never determined. However, it is believed that Stewart may have suffered from hypoxia, a condition that occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen.

Stewart's Legacy

Payne Stewart was one of the most popular and successful golfers of his generation. He was a role model for young golfers and an inspiration to everyone who knew him.

Stewart's legacy lives on in the Payne Stewart Award, which is given annually to the PGA Tour player who best exemplifies the values of character, sportsmanship, and community service.

The Last Stand of Payne Stewart is a powerful and inspiring story of a man who lived life to the fullest and left an inspiring legacy. It is a must-read for any fan of golf or anyone who is interested in a story of tragedy and triumph.
