Payne Stewart's Early Life
Payne Stewart was born on January 30, 1957, in Springfield, Missouri. He began playing golf at the age of 10, and by the time he was 16, he was one of the top junior golfers in the country.
Stewart attended Southern Methodist University, where he was a three-time All-American. He turned professional in 1979 and quickly established himself as one of the best young players on the PGA Tour.
Stewart's PGA Tour Career
Stewart won his first PGA Tour event, the Byron Nelson Classic, in 1982. He went on to win 10 more PGA Tour events, including two major championships.
Stewart's first major championship victory came at the 1991 U.S. Open. He won the tournament by one stroke over Scott Simpson.
Stewart's second major championship victory came at the 1999 U.S. Open. He won the tournament by one stroke over Phil Mickelson.
Stewart was also a member of the Ryder Cup team four times. He helped the United States team to victory in 1991, 1993, and 1999.
The Plane Crash
On October 25, 1999, Stewart was piloting a Learjet 35 from Orlando, Florida, to Dallas, Texas. The plane crashed in a field in South Dakota, killing Stewart and all five other people on board.
The cause of the crash was never determined. However, it is believed that Stewart may have suffered from hypoxia, a condition that occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen.
Stewart's Legacy
Payne Stewart was one of the most popular and successful golfers of his generation. He was a role model for young golfers and an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
