Macdonald was born in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1855. He grew up playing golf on the Old Course, and he quickly developed a passion for the game. In 1873, he moved to the United States to work for the Chicago & Alton Railroad.

Macdonald continued to play golf in the United States, and he soon became one of the leading amateur players in the country. In 1895, he won the U.S. Amateur Championship, and he was a member of the U.S. team that won the first Walker Cup in 1922.
