Early Life and Captivity

Sacagawea was born around 1788 in what is now Idaho. At the age of 12, she was captured by a rival tribe and sold as a slave to French-Canadian fur trapper Toussaint Charbonneau. In 1805, when Lewis and Clark were preparing for their expedition, they met Charbonneau and hired him as a guide. Sacagawea, who was pregnant at the time, agreed to accompany the expedition as well.

Role in the Expedition

Sacagawea's knowledge of the land and her ability to communicate with different Native American tribes proved to be invaluable to the expedition. She helped the explorers find food and water, negotiate with hostile tribes, and navigate the treacherous terrain of the Rocky Mountains. Sacagawea's young son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, also played a role in the expedition, serving as a mascot and a source of amusement for the weary explorers.
