Irving Berlin was born Israel Isidore Baline on May 11, 1888, in Tyumen, Siberia. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia who had fled the pogroms that were sweeping the country at the time. When Berlin was five years old, his family emigrated to the United States, settling in the Lower East Side of New York City.

Berlin began his musical career as a street singer, and by the age of 16 he had written his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy." In 1911, he wrote his first hit song, "Alexander's Ragtime Band," which became one of the most popular songs of the decade. Berlin continued to write hit songs throughout the 1910s and 1920s, including "White Christmas," "God Bless America," and "Puttin' on the Ritz."

In 1927, Berlin wrote his first Broadway show, The Music Box Revue. The show was a huge success, and Berlin went on to write a number of other successful Broadway shows, including Annie Get Your Gun (1946) and The Music Man (1957).

Berlin was a prolific songwriter, and he wrote over 1,500 songs in his lifetime. His songs have been sung by generations of Americans, and they continue to be popular today. Berlin was also a pioneer in the development of musical theater, and his Broadway shows have been seen by millions of people around the world.

Berlin was a complex and fascinating man. He was a self-made millionaire who was known for his generosity and his love of life. He was also a devout Jew who was proud of his heritage. Berlin's story is an American story, and it is a story that is worth telling.
