Irving Berlin was born Israel Isidore Baline on May 11, 1888, in Tyumen, Siberia. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia who had fled the pogroms that were sweeping the country at the time. When Berlin was five years old, his family emigrated to the United States, settling in the Lower East Side of New York City.

Berlin began his musical career as a street singer, and by the age of 16 he had written his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy." In 1911, he wrote his first hit song, "Alexander's Ragtime Band," which became one of the most popular songs of the decade.
