A Powerful and Inspiring Memoir of the Iranian Revolution
In her powerful and inspiring memoir, Iran Awakening, Roya Hakakian recounts her extraordinary journey as a young woman living through the Iranian Revolution. From her childhood in Tehran to her exile in the United States, Hakakian paints a vivid and moving portrait of a country in turmoil and the people who fought for freedom.
Hakakian was just seven years old when the Shah was overthrown and the Ayatollah Khomeini came to power. She witnessed firsthand the brutality of the regime as her family and friends were persecuted for their beliefs. But even in the darkest of times, Hakakian never lost hope. She found solace in her love of literature and her determination to make a difference in the world.
After graduating from college, Hakakian left Iran and moved to the United States. But she never forgot her homeland. She became a vocal advocate for human rights in Iran and used her writing to shed light on the plight of the Iranian people.
