Overview

In Contempt: Defending Free Speech, Defeating HUAC tells the story of how a group of brave individuals stood up to the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and defended the First Amendment. HUAC was a congressional committee that investigated alleged communist and subversive activities in the United States. During the Cold War, HUAC's investigations often targeted suspected communists and their sympathizers in the entertainment industry, academia, and other fields.

The book's author, John W. Dean, was a young lawyer who represented some of the people who were called to testify before HUAC. Dean provides a firsthand account of the committee's hearings, which were often hostile and intimidating. He also describes the legal strategies that he and other lawyers used to defend their clients' First Amendment rights.

In Contempt is a fascinating and inspiring story about the importance of free speech and the courage of those who defend it. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the First Amendment or the Cold War.
