I'm not sure what possessed me to apply to be a camp counselor. I'm 35 years old, for crying out loud. I have a mortgage, a job, and a receding hairline. I'm about as far removed from my camp days as I can be.

But there was something about the idea of spending a summer at camp that just wouldn't leave me alone. Maybe it was the nostalgia for the carefree days of my youth, or maybe it was just the desire to escape the monotony of my adult life. Whatever it was, I couldn't shake the feeling that I needed to do this.

So I applied to a few camps, and to my surprise, I got a job offer from one of them. I was going to be a camp counselor for a group of 8-year-old boys.

I was both excited and terrified. Excited to relive my childhood, terrified of being responsible for a bunch of little kids. But I knew that I had to do this. I had to prove to myself that I could still have fun, that I could still be a kid at heart.

So I packed my bags and headed off to camp. And it was everything I had hoped for and more.

The kids were great. They were full of energy and enthusiasm, and they were always up for a good time. I loved playing games with them, going on hikes, and swimming in the lake. I even learned how to shoot a bow and arrow.

But it wasn't just the kids that made camp so special. It was also the other counselors. We were all young and passionate about working with kids. We spent our days playing games, singing songs, and telling stories around the campfire. It was like being a kid again, but with the added responsibility of being a role model for the kids.

Of course, there were some challenges. The kids could be loud and messy, and there were times when I felt like I was losing my patience. But at the end of the day, I always reminded myself why I was there. I was there to have fun, to make a difference in the kids' lives, and to recapture my own youth.

And in the end, I did all of those things. I had an amazing summer at camp. I made lifelong friends, I learned a lot about myself, and I proved to myself that I could still be a kid at heart.

If you're thinking about becoming a camp counselor, I highly recommend it. It's a challenging but rewarding experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Here are a few tips for being a successful camp counselor:

  • Be patient. Kids can be loud, messy, and challenging, but it's important to remember that they're still learning and growing.
  • Be positive. A positive attitude can go a long way in creating a fun and supportive environment for the kids.
  • Be creative. There are endless ways to keep kids entertained at camp. Be creative and come up with new games, activities, and songs.
  • Be a role model. Kids look up to their camp counselors, so it's important to be a good role model for them. Be respectful, responsible, and kind.
  • Have fun. Camp is a great place to have fun and make memories. So relax, enjoy yourself, and let the kids be kids.
