In the annals of military history, the name Gerald Bull looms large as a brilliant inventor and enigmatic figure. His groundbreaking work on long-range artillery and his controversial supergun project have left an enduring legacy. However, Bull's life was cut short in a mysterious assassination that has captivated the public imagination for decades.
Gerald Vincent Bull was born in North Bay, Ontario, Canada in 1928. From an early age, he displayed an extraordinary aptitude for mathematics and engineering. Bull obtained a Bachelor's degree in Applied Science from the University of Toronto in 1948 and a Master's degree from Princeton University in 1950.
Bull's career began at the Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment (CARDE),where he led a team that developed the iconic "Velvet Glove" artillery shell, which revolutionized the field of long-range artillery. However, Bull's ambitions extended far beyond CARDE's walls.

In the 1960s, Bull founded Space Research Corporation (SRC),a private company that sought to develop technologies for space exploration. One of SRC's most ambitious projects was the Supergun, a massive artillery system capable of launching projectiles into orbit.
Bull's Supergun project generated intense global interest and controversy. The United States and other Western powers suspected that Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, was seeking to acquire the Supergun as part of a weapons program. In response, the Canadian government canceled the Supergun project and Bull was arrested.
After spending eight months in prison, Bull was released on bail and left Canada to pursue his work abroad. He found support from Belgium and Iraq, which allowed him to continue his Supergun research.
On March 22, 1990, Gerald Bull was assassinated in Brussels, Belgium. He was shot three times in the head and neck as he approached his apartment building. The assassination sent shockwaves through the international community.
The investigation into Bull's murder has been shrouded in mystery and speculation. Several theories have emerged, including:
- Iraq: Iraq had a motive to silence Bull due to the potential threat posed by the Supergun.
- Israel: Israel was concerned that Iraq's possession of the Supergun could pose a threat to its national security.
- Business Rivals: Bull had numerous business rivals in the defense industry who might have seen him as a threat.
- Assassination by Mistake: Some theories suggest that Bull was mistaken for another individual.
Despite extensive investigations, the perpetrators of Bull's assassination have never been definitively identified.
Gerald Bull's life and death left an enduring legacy. His contributions to artillery technology were groundbreaking, and his Supergun project remains a testament to his visionary thinking. However, the mystery surrounding his assassination has cast a long shadow over his legacy.
Bull's life and work continue to fascinate historians, intelligence analysts, and the general public alike. His story serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between scientific brilliance, military ambition, and the dark forces that can shape human history.
Gerald Bull was a brilliant inventor whose life and work were inextricably intertwined with controversy. His Supergun project pushed the boundaries of artillery technology, but his untimely assassination in Brussels remains a haunting enigma. The full truth behind Bull's assassination may never be known, but his legacy as a visionary and a victim of shadowy forces will endure for generations to come.
