After graduating from high school, Ms. Smith attended Tuskegee Institute. There, she became involved in the civil rights movement. She participated in sit-ins, marches, and other nonviolent protests.

In 1965, Ms. Smith moved to Chicago. She continued her activism there, working with organizations such as the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

In 1972, Ms. Smith was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. She served in the legislature for 12 years, during which time she worked on a variety of issues, including education, healthcare, and criminal justice.

In 1984, Ms. Smith was elected to the U.S. Congress. She served in the House of Representatives for 18 years, during which time she worked on a variety of issues, including civil rights, education, and healthcare.

Ms. Smith has received numerous awards for her work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She is a respected leader and an inspiration to all who believe in the power of nonviolent protest.
